The Musculoskeletal Central Intake and Assessment Centre (MSK CIAC) is designed to provide you with timely assessment of your low back pain condition, and a personal plan that will allow you to manage your low back pain.
Your family doctor or nurse practitioner can refer you to MSK CIAC for an initial assessment of your low back and/or low back related leg pain to determine the next steps in your care. The program is fully covered by OHIP.
Primary Care Providers (PCP) refer patients to the MSK CIAC for low back pain. Referral into the program is only available to patients whose PCP has enrolled in the program. Please check with your PCP.
The program is for patients who are 18 years of age and over and:
Patients will be booked for an assessment at a location closest to their home. Patients referred to the program will receive a complete standard assessment within four weeks by an Advanced Practice Provider (APP). The APP is typically a physiotherapist, chiropractor, or nurse practitioner, with advanced skills and training. They will develop a treatment plan that emphasizes education and self-management and can connect patients to services in their local community. If required, the APP may recommend a referral to a specialist or a surgical consultation. Patients who will go on to see a surgeon, can choose the “first available” surgeon and will experience shorter wait times or can choose a surgeon or hospital of their choice.
